I'm hoping to do the WHW in the spring.

Thanks for this FANTASTIC diary, which has not only been a great source of information, but an entertaining read too !!! :) I hope I have half the fun which you all experienced.

My only complaint - I can't find your bio's. Whats your name and are you related to Jo ? A little bit of background info would be highly appreciated.

Good luck on future adventures !

Hey Stu
Me & my mates might just see you there on New Year's Eve. Last NY's eve we camped on the summit of Cadir Idris; it was -10C but the sunrise on NY's day was just awesome. It'll be very cold and maybe the wind will knacker the tent but, as long as you don't wander off the edge in a white-out you'll come back in one piece with a great story to tell :) Life's for living right?!

Hey Stuart, do you mean overnight camp on summit of Ben Nevis? Yes, the entire summit plateau is very rocky. And you'll have to look out for areas where folk have "relieved" themselves. There is an accessible shelter on the summit for emergencies but we don't know what it's like inside. When we did it in September - it was very cold indeed, so in January it will be truly baltic. Suggest 2 mats each, 4-season sleeping bags and a pretty sturdy tent! You should get a mountain weather forecast beforehand and don't try to camp if the wind is much above 30mph. Get familiar with the summit and route down on an OS map and find where the various cliffs and gullies are. It's really a very hazardous place. Ultimately, you will be entirely weather dependent as to whether you can do it on that date or not. A gale, storm or whiteout up there could very easily turn into a life threatening situation, so if you want to do it great - but plan in advance. Have fun! Alan
