New Year
« Previous post in category · Next post in category »Had a very lazy day about the hostel today playing pool and talking to fellow backpackers. Some people were even drinking from 10am in the morning. Headed out at 8pm into the centre of Gisborne. Luckily got a lift as it is a long way into the centre of town.
At the Kingfishers Bar in town, a group of us all met, several who had been on the same flight from the UK, and some others that people had met on their travels. For new year we all headed out to the clock in the town centre for the official countdown. Unfortunately due to a lack of taxis and other transport, me and another girl ended walking about 8km back to our accommodation over the course of the next two hours. We passed the campsite for the Rhythym and Vines music festival and watched lots of frozen, mud-covered young people get off the buses.
Back at the backpackers, we huddled in the cold and wet weather around a bonfire and stayed up to watch the first sunrise of the new year. Didn’t have much success at actually seeing the sunrise due to the heavy cloud, but did see the sky turn light thereby reassuring ourselves that the earth is still spinning for another year.
